Abstract

This paper reflects on the distinctive demarcations between families in peasant communities in the semi-arid region of northern Minas Gerais by analyzing the stories of their founding told by the descendants of those who founded and lived in these communities. These stories trigger the memories of family genealogies; even though everyone is initially said to be related or from a single family, different groups, peoples, and even nations can be distinguished from the founding stories of these communities and the remembrances of their descendants. The empirical research focused on a handful of small peasant communities in the Peruaçu Valley in northern Minas Gerais, principally the municipality of Januária, with material produced between 2013 and 2015. In terms of methodology, the research partially presented in this text consisted of an ethnography. The memories described demarcations between the people in the communities, indicating heterogeneous conditions involved in the social reproduction of these families. The act of telling these stories involves updating a set of elements that invoke proximity and distance.
