Abstract

This article reflects on the use of some important notions from the work of Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) in analyzing peasantry of Italian origin in southern Brazil. The methodology includes literature review and notes from ethnographic research conducted in regions of Italian colonies in Rio Grande do Sul. The theory and methodological perspectives of Bourdieu are seen to be relevant in considering issues related to the world of work and gender, as well as the various elements that affect the everyday lives and identity processes of these men and women.
