Abstract

This article addresses how dialectical historical materialism, as presented by the philosopher Karel Kosik, represents a conceptual contribution that offers an expanded the epistemological and methodological vision suited to research in agroecology. When used together, concepts such as concrete totality, work, praxis, historicity, and dialecticsadvance the potential for analysis and thematization in research on the Brazilian countryside, agroecosystems, gender relations, and rural and city relations, and also expand our understanding by recognizing the importance of social movements to advance and strengthen agroecology. Given the multidimensional nature of agroecology in theory as well as practice, the productive appropriation of Kosik's thinking certainly represents a valuable reference.
