Sertão e nacionalidade: formação étnica e civilizatória do Brasil segundo Euclides da Cunha
Abstract
Euclides da Cunha, preocupado em contribuir para a construção de um Estado nacional civilizado, teve, com respeito à inserção do sertanejo, atitudes contraditórias. Como autor científico, adepto das teorias raciais da época, considerou-o um tipo inferior e pouco idôneo para ser cidadão. Porém como patriota e admirador do seu desempenho militar na guerra de Canudos (1897) procurou resgatar esse mestiço da condenação pela ciência, apresentando-o como tipo étnico definido que, devido à contínua mestiçagem e ao insulamento de 300 anos no sertão, se teria tornado homogêneo e maduro, pronto para constituir a base étnica da futura nação civilizada. As aporias políticas, científicas, éticas da guerra e da sua interpretação encontram uma solução duradoura e exemplar no plano estético em Os Sertões.Downloads
