Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze connections between changing tenure structure in the Brazilian semi-arid backland and the presence of small properties, in particular those linked to family farming. Dialogue with the literature on the Brazilian Northeast challenged us to problematize the dynamics that led to the fragmentation of large property in the referred region. Based on a qualitative and quantitative research effort, empirical work was carried out in the region of the Paraiba backlands, specifically in the Serra do Teixeira micro-region, guided by the following two questions: (1) which elements made possible the constitution of the image of the Northeastern Sertão as a space of the latifundio and of large property holding? (2) what ideas were the bases for representations of the origin of family farming in the Paraíba State countryside? Our intention is, based on empirical evidence not yet problematized about the Brazilian Northeast, to build guiding hypotheses for interpretations about the constitution of social groups and rural spaces in the Northeastern backland, particularly with reference to the consolidation of family farming in this space.
Keywords: land ownership structure; Northeast Brazil’s backland; family farming.
