This article is a reflection on contemporary commensality, starting from examples of the city of São Paulo (Brazil). Based on a bibliographical review and information collected on online communication channels, the concept of commensality is discussed in the context of (A) the new ways of eating 'on the street'; (B) food services that operate (1) at the border between the public and the private and (2) between the domestic and the business activity; (C) the new forms of 'eating together'. It is verified that commensality is still valued as a generator and reinforcer of social bonds, but gains new configurations for its maintenance. Yet, there is an increasing influence of mobile technologies, which are creating new manners of sharing a meal.
