Abstract
O objetivo deste texto é apresentar a explicação sociológica de José de Souza Martins acerca do mundo rural e da sociedade brasileira. Martins constrói sua teorização do agrário e do capitalismo brasileiro utilizando criativamente categorias marxistas tais como produção de relações não-capitalistas, formação econômico-social, diversidade dos tempos históricos e o conceito de desenvolvimento desigual. O artigo enfatiza o método dialético que Martins retoma de Marx e de Henri Lefebvre. Na construção analítica de Martins, o rural constitui um elemento decisivo para explicar as contradições do capitalismo brasileiro. Para Martins, uma vez que se situa na margem da sociedade capitalista, o rural oferece um formidável ponto de observação e análise da nossa formação social.
