Based on a discussion about the origins of regionalism in the Brazilian literary historiography (CANDIDO, 1975, 2000, 2014), this study analyses the representation of sertão rural space in the novel Outros Cantos, by the writer Maria Valéria Rezende (2016). Based on the anthropological perspective of Darcy Ribeiro (2006) and the contributions by Moreira (2016), this paper debates the social conflicts arising from asymmetric power relations involving hierarchical categories of class to comprehend the new outlines that trace the northeastern sertão within the globalized world and how this space turns up resignified in Brazilian contemporary literature (SANTINI, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014).
Keywords: Brazilian contemporary literature; Maria Valéria Rezende; sertão.
