Abstract

In this article it is presented the case of the ecological agriculture of Ipê and Antônio Prado in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The objective is to analyze the process of sociotechnical change, identifying the innovations produced and the relationships and mechanisms by which these innovations acquire the quality of novelty and, thus, form a process of agroecological transition of these municipalities. The main theoretical references are the Multilevel Perspective of Transitions Analysis (PMN) and the 'novelty production' approach in agriculture. The data and information presented were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation with environmental technicians and farmers during 2012-13, and updated in 2017-2018. Technical documents produced by farmers and environmental technicians of the municipality were also used for the analysis. It could be observed that, once families opt for agriculture without agrochemicals, which is locally called ecological agriculture, and started to market the products of this agriculture at a fair in Porto Alegre, a process of linked and correlated changes begins, regarding other aspects of the material production and the institutional environment in which the families operate. In this connection, other innovations emerge, such as new farming techniques, new production inputs, new equipment, changes in food legislation, new processed products, new marketing spaces, new associations and groups of ecological farmers. This multidimensional character of the changes that have taken place allows the delineation of a 'web' of innovations, or of a niche of innovation in ecological agriculture, which represents the local level of the agroecological transition process.
