The authors draw an analysis regarding the impacts from harbour enterprises led by the company Estaleiros do Brasil Ltda. (EBR) upon the everyday life of the artisanal fishermen of Vila Nova in São José do Norte. These enterprises are the representation of the abstract idea of progress but destroy community livelihood. The article results from a research regarding the fishermen of Vila Nova whose space has been object of intervention by the abovementioned company. Interviews were accomplished with fishermen allowing to discover in which manner the eviction of the place of home has affected their lives as well as to analyse the difficulties of insertion in other marginal localities. However, it also shows that even in these marginal places the members of the community resist denying the company´s prohibitions, resistance that is also expressed in the own dreams of the fishermen and their families.
