Abstract

Agroecology proposes to incorporate sustainable practices in agricultural production and consequently the development of new marketing channels prepared to assimilate its goods. Despite the efforts to create those marketing channels and to improve the communication between production and consumption, there is a preference for debate and resource investments in production. We observed this distinction (both quantitative and qualitative) reviewing the scientific literature from 2008 to 2018. This paper aims to develop an historical approach to understand the reasons for this hierarchy between production and consumption based on an understanding of the market concept in neoclassical economics, economic sociology and the new economic sociology. Consumption is discussed through the lenses of the sociology and anthropology of consumption. In addition, we highlight the complexity and challenges in studying consumption, and we present methodological aspects that would enable us to redefine the relationship between production and consumption within the agroecology context.
Keywords: consumption; agroecology; Sociology of consumption; Politicization of consumption; food consumption; ethnography.
