Unsustainability in family farms and the present rural exodus

Abstract

Family farming represents a large share of Brazilian rural producers. However, it is not a homogeneous group and some of its subgroups face situations of vulnerability. In this study, vulnerability is considered a consequence of reduced access to human, social, physical, financial and natural capital (ELLIS, 2000). Without this access, family farmers end up in a difficult situation and their survival in the countryside becomes unsustainable, leaving rural exodus as the only option. Thus, this study aims to analyze why family farmers in the Marechal Candido Rondon region are leaving their activities, what factors led them to do this and what are the deficiencies in their assets. For this purpose, interviews with former farmers were carried out, and in analyzing the data, it was concluded that the motivations for rural exodus today are multidimensional. Cluster analysis enabled the identification of four distinct motivational profiles as well as the principal shortcomings in human and physical capital.
