Dinâmica de concentração e ciclo de vida na agricultura dos Estados Unidos
Abstract
A partir dos dados do Agriculture Economics and Land Ownership Survey, patrocinado pelo Departamento de Agricultura do governo americano em 1999, o artigo procura demonstrar
que nos EUA a distribuição dos estabelecimentos agrícolas entre escala de produção e faixa etária dos operadores reflete um comportamento condizente com a idéia chayanoviana de diferenciação demográfica, segundo a qual o tamanho dos empreendimentos familiares é regulado pelo ciclo de vida dos seus membros, ou seja, pelos diferentes estágios reprodutivos de suas trajetórias. Esta proposição do artigo contraria a hipótese de concentração linear e crescente da agricultura americana subjacente à metáfora do treadmill largamente utilizada na literatura
especializada e sugere outras perspectivas à apreciação da controversa e complexa relação entre campesinato e capitalismo.
