Canudos: a terra dos homens de Deus
Abstract
Um século depois do massacre de Canudos, a história de Antônio Conselheiro e do arraial fundado na fazenda Belo Monte continua fortemente marcada por duas expressivas correntes interpretativas. A principal delas teve como base o clássico de Euclides da Cunha, Os Sertões e se manteve dominante até a década de 1950. A outra, nascida nas décadas de 1960 e 1970 com as reivindicações por transformações estruturais da sociedade brasileira, fez de Canudos um movimento politicamente estruturado e tendo por objetivo a luta pela terra e contra o latifúndio. Este artigo pretende discutir as fragilidades historiográficas e documentais dessa última abordagem, analisando os suportes teóricos e ideológicos presentes na construção dessa versão que, não à toa, retoma toda sua força simbólica e paradigmática da luta pela terra no Brasil.
