Author Guidelines

To submit a manuscript, you must first register as an author on the Estudos Sociedade e Agricultura (ESA) journal portal.

Note: Authors must register beforehand on the ORCID platform so that they can provide their registration number in their ESA portal profiles, thus contributing to efforts to attribute scientific authorship.

The text undergoes a preliminary assessment regarding its suitability to the journal's profile and editorial line, compliance with norms and guidelines, and plagiarism. If any non-conformity is found, it will be returned to the authors with the necessary observations. If approved in this first stage (desk review), the article will be sent to ad hoc reviewers for double-blind peer review. For more information, see the Evaluation Process.

All submissions are evaluated based on the criteria listed below, and those that do not comply with the norms will be returned to the authors.

  1. The contribution must be original and unpublished. It cannot have been published or be under consideration for publication by another journal or as a book chapter. At the time of submission, authors assume responsibility for not using false or copied data. Fraudulent use of data, manipulation of citations, and false authorship will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  2. Plagiarism, even partial, will not be permitted. To assess this, all manuscripts undergo anti-plagiarism analysis before being sent to reviewers. If plagiarism is verified, the manuscript will be rejected. Regarding self-plagiarism, the journal allows repetitions of up to 30% of the content of other published works by the same author. Repetition of objectives, results, and conclusions will not be permitted, even if the percentage limit is respected.
  3. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and resources is permitted for the preparation, writing, revision, and translation of submitted manuscripts. In case of AI use, it must be reported and mentioned, indicating the sources of the materials used, the tool used, the purpose, and the effective use, indicating this in a footnote and/or abstract and methodology. Hiding the use and content of AI is considered an ethical failure that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in research, according to the Guide for the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and resources in research communication on the SciELO Network. The submission of manuscripts and content generated by AI as if they were authored by humans is prohibited, according to Ordinance No. 2664, of March 6, 2026, of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
  4. It is mandatory to provide the data (education, institutional affiliation, brief curriculum) of all authors during the submission process (pay attention, however, to item 7). To do so, this information must be filled in during the submission process or a supplementary document (in a different .doc or .pdf file than the article) must be sent in the form of a cover letter with the following information: article title, full name(s) of the author(s), institutional affiliation, brief academic curriculum and email (click "Upload file" on screen "2. Manuscript Transfer"). If this document is not attached, the metadata for all authors must be filled in on the next screen ("3. Insert metadata"). The lack of information about any of the authors is grounds for the article being returned.
  5. Texts must be on A4 page format, in Microsoft Word format (.doc extension), using Times New Roman font size 12, 1.5 line spacing and 2.5 cm margins on all sides. Texts in the form of articles or reviews are accepted. Articles should have between 45,000 and 60,000 characters with spaces (including abstract, references and footnotes). Reviews should be up to 15,000 characters including spaces.
  6. The article must include an abstract (1000 characters including spaces) and keywords (at least 3 words or 3 terms composed of a maximum of 3 words each) in Portuguese (or its original language) and also in English (title, abstract, and keywords). The review must also contain the title in English.
  7. The author(s)' name(s) should not appear in the body of the article and should also be removed from the file properties to ensure anonymity in the evaluation process (Ensuring Blind Peer Review).
  8. Footnotes should be used to present essential topics. Their use should be kept to a minimum, avoiding distraction from the reading. Footnotes should not be used for bibliographic citations and should not exceed 5 (five) lines.
  9. The clarity of data in figures, charts, and tables is the sole responsibility of the authors, who must clearly indicate the authorship and source. If they are illegible, new versions will be requested in order to ensure the information is understood.
  10. The author(s) must indicate the source(s) of funding for the research in "Comments to the Editor" at the time of submission (1. Beginning).
  11. It is the author's responsibility to proofread and grammatically review the text before submission. In the case of texts in Portuguese, the writing of the text must comply with the 2016 Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement.
  12. References and citations must follow ABNT standards (NBR 6023:2025 and NBR 10520:2023).
